SATURDAY AM UPDATE: WB's Detective Pikachu delivered an estimated $20.7 million on Friday, which is just ahead of what Shazam! brought in ahead of a $53.5 million opening. The film is currently looking at a three-day anywhere from $55-60 million. Pikachureceived an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

'Avengers: Endgame' Leads Record-Breaking April at the Domestic Box Office

At the end of March, the 2019 box office was at its lowest point when compared to the five last years and trailing 2018 by -16%. By the end of a record-setting April at the domestic box office, that gap in the year-over-year performance started to close with 2019 now trailing 2018 by -11.8%, and just seven days into May that gap continues to shrink as we move into summer 2019.

The weekend played out mostly as expected with the release of Shazam! from Warner Bros. and New Line securing the top spot in both the domestic and worldwide marketplace while Paramount's release of Pet Sematary scored the second largest opening for a Stephen King adaptation. Disney and Marvel's Captain Marvel is certain to top the weekend yet again as it pushes over $260 million domestically in just ten days while Paramount debuts the animated feature Wonder Park, Lionsgate and CBS release Five Feet Apart and Focus releases the near-future thriller Captive State. Also looking at a top ten finish is Lionsgate's release of No Manches Frida 2, the sequel to the 2016 feature that debuted with over $3.6 million from just 362 locations.
