Friday Report: 'Noah' Opens to $15.2 Million, 'Sabotage' Bombs
Noah set sail with a solid $15.2 million on Friday, while Sabotage was the latest Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle to blow up.
Noah's $15.2 million debut is a bit up from Russell Crowe's Robin Hood ($13 million), and is also noticeably higher than February's Son of God ($9.5 million). Still, its miles away from disaster movies 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow, both of which opened over $23 million.
The movie received a poor "C" CinemaScore, which isn't surprising given some of the unexpected fantasy elements in the movie. Assuming that negative word-of-mouth doesn't take effect this weekend, Noah should wind up with around $40 million for the three-day frame.
In its second weekend, Divergent fell 64 percent to an estimated $8.1 million. In comparison, The Hunger Games dropped 72 percent at the same point. To date, the young-adult adaptation has already earned $76.9 million.
Muppets Most Wanted took third place with an estimated $2.6 million (down 44 percent). Through eight days, the latest Muppets movie has grossed $24.5 million.
Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel expanded to 977 theatres and earned $2.38 million. That's only up 26 percent from last Friday, despite the fact that it's playing in over three times many locations. So far, Budapest has earned just over $18 million.
Faith-based hit God's Not Dead added nearly 400 theaters and fell 16 percent to $2.35 million. The movie has already taken in $15.3 million, and should be past $20 million by the end of the weekend.
Sabotage bombed with an estimated $1.83 million on Friday. That's less than The Last Stand ($2.03 million), which was the former governor of California's not-so-triumphant return to leading man status. For the weekend, Sabotage is poised to finish in seventh place with less than $6 million.
As of publication, estimates were not yet available for Cesar Chavez or Bad Words (both were not expected to be in the Top 10, though).
Weekend Projections
1. Noah - $40 million
2. Divergent - $25 million
3. Muppets - $10 million
4. Budapest - $8.4 million
5. God's Not Dead - $8.1 million
6. Mr. Peabody - $8 million
7. Sabotage - $5.3 million
