End-of-Run Report: Party's Over for 'Valentine's Day,' 'Green Zone' Evacuated
Valentine's Day wrapped up its impressive, albeit extremely front-loaded, run this past Thursday, May 6. Green Zone also withdrew from theaters after failing to come even remotely close to matching the success of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass's Bourne collaborations.
Opening Feb. 12, Valentine's Day was perfectly coordinated with its titular holiday, which helped the movie set a new four-day President's Day Weekend record with $63.1 million. It also had the second-best three day opening ever for a romantic comedy ($56.3 million), falling just behind Sex and the City. Unfortunately, audiences didn't exactly fall in love with Valentine's Day (Box Office Mojo readers awarded it a weak "C" grade), leading to a huge 70 percent second weekend decline. It leveled off a bit from there, but the damage was already done: in 84 days, Valentine's Day fell short of doubling its opening weekend take, finishing with $110.5 million. Add in more than $100 million overseas, and Valentine's Day was successful enough that a sequel, tentatively titled New Year's Eve, is reportedly in development for a December 2011 release. Valentine's Day hits DVD and Blu-ray this Tuesday, May 18.
Green Zone concluded its disappointing campaign with just over $35 million in 56 days. With Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass reteaming for a third action thriller after international hits The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone may have seemed like a surefire winner, but it opened the weekend of Mar. 12 to just $14.3 million and fell hard after that. A wealth of factors held Green Zone back, including its Middle East milieu, tepid reviews and word-of-mouth and, most of all, advertising that emphasized nondescript action over story. Green Zone was distributor Universal Pictures' third underachiever in 2010 after Leap Year and The Wolfman, and was followed a week later by the studio's worst of the bunch, Repo Men. Green Zone debuts on DVD and Blu-ray on June 22.
