Friday Report: 'Fockers,' 'True Grit' Lead Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve, Little Fockers led for the third day in a row, while True Grit (2010) had the best hold. Overall business was down from Christmas Eve last year, but attendance was closer to Christmas Eve 2004, the last time it landed on a Friday, when Meet the Fockers was on top. Christmas Eve is always the low point of the end-of-year holidays, which is why all movies saw declines from Thursday.
Little Fockers made an estimated $5.1 million, increasing its sum to $19.4 million in three days. It continued to lag behind Meet the Fockers, which grossed $7.2 million ($9.2 million adjusted for ticket price inflation) with a three-day tally of $31.6 million (over $40 million adjusted), but it had a smaller Christmas Eve drop, 28 percent versus 42 percent.
Easing 16 percent from Thursday, True Grit earned nearly as much as Little Fockers and moved up to second place from third. The Western remake added an estimated $4.8 million to its coffers for a $16 million haul in three days, which was on par with 3:10 to Yuma (2007)'s first weekend in attendance.
Tron Legacy slipped to third with nearly $4 million, raising its score to $72.2 million in eight days. Its 35 percent Christmas Eve dip was a bit worse than Avatar's 32 percent last year.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader spent the day slightly ahead of Yogi Bear, grossing an estimated $2.2 million for a $55.4 million tally in 15 days. Yogi Bear picked up an estimated $2.1 million for a $30.1 million sum in eight days. Tangled ranked sixth with an estimated $1.7 million for a $139 million total in 31 days.
The Fighter and Black Swan switched spots. Fighter was down just 20 percent from Thursday, while Black Swan fell 40 percent. Fighter collected an estimated $1.28 million for a $20.4 million tally in 15 days, and Black Swan made an estimated $1.07 million for a $23.5 million sum in 22 days.
In 11th place, How Do You Know's woes continued. The comedy had a similar drop-off to Spanglish in 2004, only with even lower grosses. How Do You Know packed an estimated $525,000 for a $12 million tally in eight days.
