Around-the-World Roundup: 'Resident Evil' Rules Again
The fifth installment in the Resident Evil franchise once again dominated the overseas box office, while The Expendables 2, Ted and The Dark Knight Rises reached milestones this weekend.
Resident Evil: Retribution added $30.5 million for a new foreign total of $103.8 million. Its top market was once again Japan, where it eased 27 percent to $6.3 million; Japan is currently the movie's highest-grossing overall market with a strong $28.1 million. It also had good debuts in Germany ($3.6 million) and Mexico ($3.5 million). Resident Evil: Retribution has now made more overseas than the first three installments in the series, but has a long way to go before matching its predecessor's $236 million.
While official grosses aren't available, The Expendables 2 looks to have earned around $12 million this weekend, which pushed its foreign total past the $200 million mark. Ted also passed $200 million, becoming just the second R-rated comedy to ever hit that level after the second Hangover movie. That makes 12 $200 million movies from Summer 2012, compared to 11 from Summer 2011.
On a worldwide basis, Ted has now earned $420.8 million, and with 12 markets left to open it could get close to $500 million before the end of its run.
The Bourne Legacy added $8.7 million this weekend, which included a solid $3.4 million opening in France. In the process, the movie's total reached $102.6 million, which makes it Universal Pictures' sixth movie to earn over $100 million overseas. The other five movies (in order of grosses) are Snow White and the Huntsman ($241.3 million), Battleship ($237.6 million), Ted ($202.9 million), American Reunion ($178 million) and Dr. Seuss' The Lorax ($123.1 million).
With a handful of markets, including China, yet to open, The Bourne Legacy will ultimately pass The Bourne Supremacy's $112.3 million, but won't come anywhere close to Ultimatum's $215.3 million.
Nearing the conclusion of its run, The Dark Knight Rises grossed $3.9 million this weekend for a new foreign total of $623.8 million. That brought the movie's worldwide total to $1.067 billion, which pushed it ahead of Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066 billion) to claim seventh place on the all-time worldwide chart.
Brad Pitt gangster movie Killing Them Softly was originally supposed to open this weekend in the U.S., but was ultimately pushed back to the end of November. Some foreign dates stayed the same, though, which meant it opened to $2.4 million from two foreign markets this weekend. The movie had fine debuts in the U.K. ($1.55 million) and Spain ($820,143), and can expect similarly modest results in other foreign territories over the next few months.
