Third 'Men in Black' Arrives in 2012
After a ten-year hiatus, the Men in Black will return Memorial Day Weekend 2012, distributor Sony Pictures announced this afternoon. Dubbed MIB 3 instead of Men in Black III, the picture will bring back stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones and director Barry Sonnenfeld and will be the first 3D movie in the series.
The first Men in Black movie raked in $84.1 million in its first five and a half days during Independence Day week in 1997, ultimately closing with $250.7 million (or around $435 million adjusted for ticket price inflation). To this day, it remains one of the most successful comic book adaptations ever (ranking seventh all-time), and, in conjunction with Independence Day ($306.2 million) a year earlier, helped elevate Smith to the blockbuster status he still enjoys today.
Five years later, the Men in Black team reunited for Men in Black II, which failed to reach the same levels of the first movie, pulling in $87.2 million in its five-day Independence Day week launch. Many found it to be a step down in quality (Box Office Mojo readers rated the first movie a "B," but gave the sequel a "C+") and, despite costing much more than the first, grossed a comparatively mild $190.4 million.
No plot details are currently available for MIB 3, though it's been widely reported that Josh Brolin is in negotiations to play a younger version of Jones's Agent Kay character. MIB 3 currently shares its May 25 opening day with board game adaptation Battleship.
