Around-the-World Roundup: 'Resident Evil' Slays With $49.6 Million Debut
Resident Evil: Retribution had a huge opening overseas this weekend with $49.6 million from 50 markets. Across the same territories, the last Resident Evil movie only debuted to around $39 million, suggesting that the latest chapter could top that movie's $236.1 million franchise high.
As expected, Retribution was strongest in Asia. It had the best Hollywood debut so far this year in Japan with $11.2 million, and was also great in Taiwan ($4.4 million) and Malaysia ($2 million). It was a bit underwhelming in South Korea ($2 million), though it was probably hurt a bit from opening against local hit Masquerade ($7.3 million). Elsewhere, the movie did very good business in Russia ($8.5 million) and Brazil ($3.1 million), but was disappointing in Australia ($1.5 million).
While official numbers aren't available for The Expendables 2, it appears the movie has earned at least $186 million overseas so far (including a whopping $40 million in China through just 13 days). That tops the original movie's $171 million, and it puts the sequel on pace to cruise past the $200 million mark in the next few weeks.
The Bourne Legacy added $8.9 million this weekend, which includes a solid $2.3 million first place debut in Germany. Its total reached $90.9 million, and early this week it will pass the original movie's $92.4 million total. It will move a bit closer to topping The Bourne Supremacy's $112.3 million when it expands in to eight more markets, including France, next weekend.
Ted grossed $8.5 million this weekend for a new foreign total of $189.4 million. In Mexico, the movie debuted in first place with $2.1 million, which is the latest in a series of very impressive openings. On Tuesday, it will move past the original Hangover ($190.2 million) to become the highest-grossing original English-language R-rated comedy ever overseas.
Early in the weekend, Ted passed $400 million worldwide, which makes it Universal's only movie so far this year to reach that mark. Remarkably, it still has 17 territories left to open, and those should help it ultimately get to at least $450 million.
Nearing the end of its run, Prometheus continued to put up good numbers overseas. The movie grossed $8.3 million, which included a first place debut in Italy ($2.6 million) and another solid weekend in China ($4.6 million). Its overseas total reached $263.6 million, and worldwide the movie is at $390 million.
The Dark Knight Rises added $7.3 million for a new foreign total of $617 million. Worldwide, it moved up to ninth place all-time with $1.058 billion, and will ultimately close in seventh place ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066 billion).
