Seven-Day Summary: 'Dawn Treader' Sinks
It was a tough week for the The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Tourist, as both newcomers underperformed against modest expectations. The picture was rosier for Tangled, which eased 31 percent, and Black Swan, which finished in fifth place despite playing at only 90 locations. Overall box office was down around five percent from the same week last year, when The Princess and the Frog led.
The third installment in the Narnia series earned $30.4 million in its first seven days, which was less than half of predecessors The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ($81.3 million) and Prince Caspian ($68.1 million). It also finished below The Golden Compass's $31.9 million start. If Dawn Treader can follow The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe's pattern from here, it will ultimately finish with just over $100 million, which is a far cry from Prince Caspian's $141.6 million.
The Tourist debuted to a soft $22.1 million. While that's higher than Duplicity, it's a tad lower than Killers, which is disappointing considering the supposed combined star power of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.
Tangled added $18.1 million for a total of $119.1 million. In the process, it passed Disney's last two November animated offerings, 2008's Bolt ($114.1 million) and 2009's The Princess and the Frog ($104.4 million). It sets its sights on another Disney princess movie, Enchanted, which it will eclipse by early next week.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 fell 47 percent to $11.5 million for a total of $260.7 million. For the first time in a few weeks, it managed to play better than Goblet of Fire during the Monday to Thursday period, indicating that there is still a slight chance that it can hit $300 million.
Black Swan grossed $5.1 million this week, which translated to an astounding per-theater average of $56,990. In ten days, the Darren Aronofsky-Natalie Portman ballet thriller has amassed $7.4 million, and is expanding to 959 theaters today before increasing to 1,400 locations on Wednesday.
At just four venues, The Fighter tallied $433,935. While that's not quite as high as The King's Speech's first week, it still showed solid interest ahead of The Fighter's nationwide release this weekend.
