Around-the-World Roundup: 'Sex and the City 2's on Top
While it may not be a monster hit stateside, Sex and the City 2 expanded to 49 territories this weekend and took first place at the foreign box office. Another domestic underperformer, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, continued to attract substantial international audiences, while Bollywood movie Raajneeti had a huge opening in India and Robin Hood and Shrek Forever After vied for fourth place.
Sex and the City 2 added 33 markets, increasing its weekend take 57 percent to $44 million. Major openings included Australia ($7.6 million), France ($3.7 million) and Russia ($3.5 million). The sequel, though, had its most impressive showings in the Scandinavian countries: it had the best opening weekend of 2010 in Denmark ($2 million), Norway ($1.2 million) and Finland ($1.1 million). Through its second weekend, Sex and the City 2 has grossed $89 million overseas for a worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total of $162.3 million.
Prince of Persia was down 39 percent to $37.6 million in its second major weekend for a foreign total of $156.4 million. This now stands as the highest foreign gross ever for a video game adaptation, passing Lara Croft: Tomb Raider's $143.5 million. While Persia did not have any substantial new openings, it did see solid second weekend performances in Russia ($5.5 million), China ($4.4 million), France ($3 million), Mexico ($2.7 million), South Korea ($2.4 million) and Australia ($1.7 million).
Thanks to a huge launch in India, Raajneeti opened in third place for the weekend with $10.9 million. The nearly three-hour long Bollywood production racked up $9.7 million in India, which distributor UTV Communications claims was the second-highest opening ever for a native production. It also debuted in the United Kingdom, Singapore and a handful of Middle East countries, albeit to lower results.
Robin Hood finished in fourth place over the weekend, falling 49 percent to $8.9 million. The Ridley Scott-Russell Crowe medieval epic's gross grew to $172.2 million through its fourth weekend. Shrek Forever After rounded out the Top Five with $7.5 million in 19 territories. Despite still not opening in most major European and Asian markets, Shrek 4 has made $67.2 million through its third weekend. Over two-thirds of its earnings have come from Russia, where its $46.1 million total now ranks it as the highest-grossing animated movie ever in the region, passing Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ($44.6 million), as well as the second biggest movie of the year, behind Avatar and ahead of Alice in Wonderland (2010).
How to Train Your Dragon continued to play well, grossing $4.5 million for an international total of $254.2 million. Marmaduke expanded in to 13 new markets, earning $3.5 million for a total of $5.1 million. Finally, Iron Man 2 drew $2.8 million, bringing its total to $288.2 million. With a worldwide gross of $579.5 million, Iron Man 2 is poised to pass Iron Man's $585.2 million worldwide total by next weekend.
