West Side Story Sing-A-Long Tour
In the opening scene of Defending Your Life (1991), Albert Brooks's character is driving his convertible while listening to "Something's Coming," from West Side Story. While butchering the tune, Brooks fumbles with the CD case and smashes into another car.
The scene plays on the universal appeal of West Side Story—infectious music and lyrics—while mocking the urge to sing along.
With no trace of irony, MGM Home Entertainment has announced an eight-city sing-a-long tour to promote the special edition DVD of West Side Story. Now, solo car and shower singers can get together and belt out "Maria" with an entire chorus.
The West Side Story Sing-a-Long Tour will bring the classic musical starring Natalie Wood to movie theaters for one-night screenings in San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Ft. Lauderdale, Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto. The Sing-a-Long Tour runs from March 27 through April 11. MGM says fans will receive free tickets before and on the day of the screening.
If the notion of listening to an audience sing "I Feel Pretty" doesn't tickle your fancy, you can always dress as your favorite character from the movie. Each moviegoer will receive a bag filled with props they can use during the screening. MGM says prizes—special edition DVD collector's sets, Jets and Sharks t-shirts, a 1-800-FLOWERS bouquet—will also be distributed to especially enthusiastic fans.
Such antics may not have been what the artists had in mind when they made the Academy Award-winning 1961 Best Picture West Side Story but it might keep those wild West Side Story fans off the streets.
