MPAA Ratings: 'Knight & Day,' 'Eat Pray Love,' 'Grease Sing-Along' and More
The Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Ratings Administration released their weekly ratings bulletin this morning, which included a rating for upcoming action comedy Knight & Day along with revised ratings for Eat Pray Love and Grease Sing-Along.
Knight & Day received a PG-13 rating for "sequences of action violence throughout, and brief strong language." This fits in with most Tom Cruise action movies like the Mission: Impossible series, War of the Worlds, Top Gun, and more, though he has had plenty of R-rated hits as well (Rain Man, The Firm, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men). Knight & Day opens on Wed., June 23, and faces ensemble comedy Grown Ups that weekend.
After Julia Roberts drama Eat Pray Love was slapped with an R rating last month for "brief strong language," producers elected to protest the rating. The MPAA's Appeals Board (an entirely separate entity from the Classification and Ratings Administration) ultimately overturned the R rating, opting instead for a PG-13. In a slightly ironic twist, though, they actually added "some sexual references and male rear nudity" to the explanation, while leaving the "brief strong language" in place. Eat Pray Love debuts opposite The Expendables and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Aug. 13.
In a move that will surely raise some eyebrows, Grease Sing-Along was awarded a PG-13 rating for "sexual content including references, teen smoking and drinking, and language." In comparison, the original Grease was rated PG when it was released in 1978. The MPAA's bulletin indicates that Grease Sing-Along is an edited version that includes different footage, thereby justifying the rating change. While this may be the case, it may also be that the original's content would have garnered a PG-13 had that rating existed in 1978 (the PG-13 rating was not introduced until 1984) or that MPAA has grown more prudish. Grease Sing-Along is scheduled to open in July, though no specific date has yet been announced.
Swedish crime thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which has been playing in limited release for nearly three months, was finally assigned an R rating this week for "disturbing violent content including rape, grisly images, sexual material, nudity and language." Since opening on March 19, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has collected $7.4 million, making it the highest grossing limited-only release thus far this year. An English-language version is currently in development, with David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club) set to direct.
I Spit on Your Grave, a remake of the 1980 movie of the same name, received an R rating for "pervasive strong sadistic brutal violence, rape and torture, nudity and language." Anchor Bay plans to release the movie sometime this fall, though it has yet to settle on a date.
