Around-the-World Roundup: 'Pi' Leads, 'Hobbit' Passes $600M Overseas
Coming out of the holidays, Life of Pi held on to the top spot at the overseas box office, while The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey continued along the path towards $1 billion worldwide.
Without adding any major new territories, Life of Pi grossed just under $35 million this weekend. It held first place in Russia ($4.46 million) and Australia ($4.1 million), and also continued to play well in the U.K. ($3.8 million), Germany ($3.25 million) and South Korea ($2.8 million). The Ang Lee movie has now racked up $358 million overseas for a worldwide total over $452 million.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey fell 55 percent to $26.2 million this weekend. To date, the movie has earned $609.3 million overseas, which is more than The Fellowship of the Ring ($556 million) and The Two Towers ($584 million); when it reaches China at the end of February it should get past $700 million overseas and $1 billion worldwide.
Les Miserables earned $25.5 million from 22 markets this weekend, over half of which came from its massive U.K. opening. Produced by U.K. company Working Title, the adaptation of the popular musical debuted to $13.4 million, which is the biggest three-day start ever there for distributor Universal Pictures International. It was also the top opening ever for a musical, a record it also set in New Zealand ($625,000). The movie has so far grossed $115.1 million overseas, and is guaranteed to close with well over $200 million.
Jack Reacher expanded to a total of 57 markets and made just under $18 million this weekend. It had underwhelming debuts in Russia ($3 million) and Brazil ($1 million), though it took first place in Spain with $1.5 million. To date, the Tom Cruise thriller has earned $81.05 million.
Wreck-It Ralph continued its slow progress overseas with an estimated $11.6 million this weekend. It's made $156.9 million total across its 59 markets, which represent 76 percent of its total potential.
Coinciding with its domestic launch, Gangster Squad opened in 19 foreign markets (28 percent of international) and earned $9.3 million this weekend. It had solid debuts in the U.K. ($3.4 million) and Australia ($2.4 million), and it's set to expand in to most other major territories through the next two months.
Including previews, Anna Karenina opened to $4.9 million in Russia (the setting of the story) this weekend; overall, it added $6.3 million for a new foreign total of $31.4 million.
