Friday Report: 'Transformers' Leads Quiet Fourth of July
Transformers: Age of Extinction easily held the top spot on the Fourth of July holiday, and will easily repeat in first place this weekend. Melissa McCarthy's Tammy did decent business in second place, while Deliver Us From Evil and Earth to Echo tanked.
It's worth noting that the Fourth of July isn't typically a big movie-going day; these titles would likely have earned a bit more on a traditional Friday. Business should pick up over the weekend.
Age of Extinction fell 75 percent to an estimated $10.6 million on Friday. That drop is on roughly on par with the other Summer releases that opened above $90 million. For the weekend, Transformers will likely earn less than $40 million.
In its third day in theaters, Tammy added $6.4 million for an early total of $18.2 million. For the weekend, it should earn around $22 million.
The rest of the field was very close on Friday. How to Train Your Dragon 2 took third place with $2.8 million, which brings its total to $134 million. Earth to Echo earned $2.6 million, and is on track for around $10 million this weekend. Deliver Us From Evil rounded out the Top Five with $2.5 million, which will likely translate to a $9 million weekend.
At 175 locations, Begin Again earned a solid $425,000. For the weekend, it will earn at least $1.2 million.
As of publication, Friday estimates for America (2014) and Snowpiercer were not available.
Weekend Projections
1. Transformers - $39 million
2. Tammy - $23 million
3. How to Train Your Dragon - $10.5 million
4. Earth to Echo - $10.1 million
5. 22 Jump Street - $9.5 million
6. Deliver Us From Evil - $9 million
