Around-the-World Roundup: 'Number Four' Edges Out 'Swan'
While it fell short of first place domestically, I Am Number Fourinched past Black Swan to claim the top spot at the foreign box office over the weekend. The King's Speech had yet another strong showing, True Grit played decently in a few new territories, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader leveraged a solid opening in Japan to reach a much-anticipated milestone.
I Am Number Four earned $17.8 million from around 50 percent of the international markets, pushing its two-week total to $21.9 million. The movie opened in first place in Russia and Australia with $3.3 million and $2.3 million, respectively, though it settled for third in the United Kingdom($2.6 million) and South Korea ($1.7 million). This weekend, the sci-fi adventure expands in to Mexico, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Black Swan added $17.5 million to bring its formidable foreign total to $122.4 million. Its top debut came in South Korea, where it placed second with $2.2 million. It also continued to hold well in most of its territories, including France ($3 million) and Spain (first place, $2.5 million). The ballet drama has now made over $228 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign) and moves in to India and Sweden this weekend.
On the same weekend that it won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The King's Speech grossed $14.9 million overseas. The movie continued to play well in key territories like France ($2.3 million), Germany ($2.2 million) and the U.K. ($1.95 million). It struggled a bit, though, with some challenging new regions: it opened in fifth in Japan with $1.2 million and seventh in Russia with $614,000. The King's Speech has now made $154.3 million overseas for a worldwide total of $270 million.
True Grit had its biggest weekend thus far with $13.3 million from 53 territories. This boost can be attributed to a strong second place start in France ($4.3 million) and a decent fourth place debut in Germany ($2.1 million). With a foreign total of $47.1 million, it's now the highest-grossing Western overseas since Brokeback Mountain. Its worldwide sum of $214.5 million is even more impressive, making it the top Western since Wild Wild West by that distinction.
Gnomeo and Juliet grossed $9.3 million for a total of $36.7 million. It was up 12 percent to $4 million in its third weekend in the U.K., which was good for first place there. The movie's worldwide total has now reached $112.3 million.
Two romantic comedies followed Gnomeo and Juliet on the chart. Just Go With It earned $9.3 million for a foreign total of $25 million. It debuted in second place in Germany and Spain with $2.8 million and $2.1 million, respectively. No Strings Attached added $9.1 million for a total of $34.2 million. It had poor openings in the U.K. ($1.6 million) and Mexico ($0.72 million). Both Just Go With It and No Strings Attached have now passed $100 million worldwide.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader had its last major opening this weekend, as the fantasy sequel debuted to $6.6 million in Japan. That's notably off from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but about even with Prince Caspian. With $284 million, Dawn Treader has at last passed the final international total of Prince Caspian ($278 million).
This coming weekend, Rango opens in 35 territories including the U.K., Germany, Spain, South Korea and Mexico, while The Adjustment Bureau strikes 21 countries including the U.K., Russia, Australia, Spain and South Korea.
