Around-the-World Roundup: 'Black Swan' Continues to Soar Overseas
Black Swan extended its impressive foreign run with another first place finish this weekend, trumping chart regulars The King's Speech and Tangled. Paramount movies No Strings Attached and True Grit had their highest-grossing weekends so far, though their respective genres held them back a bit. Paul got off to a strong start in the United Kingdom thanks at least in part to the presence of popular British actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
Darren Aronofsky's ballet thriller netted another $17.6 million from 39 markets for an foreign total of $97.9 million. It opened in first place in Spain with $2.9 million and had a solid $1.5 million launch in Italy. Black Swan also dipped just 18 percent to $4.1 million in star Vincent Cassel's native France, and held the top spot in Paris and the surrounding suburbs according to distributor 20th Century Fox. On Monday, the movie passed $200 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign).
The King's Speech expanded in to eight additional territories and earned $15.8 million. Its top debut came in Germany, where it wound up in third place with $2.3 million. It also continued to play well in France ($2.8 million) and the U.K. ($2.7 million), where it's now made more than $60 million. Through Sunday, the Oscar favorite has made $130.7 million overseas, and it's set to expand in to Russia and Japan this weekend.
Without any notable openings, Tangled eased 31 percent to an estimated $12.1 million. Its highest-grossing territories were Spain ($2.7 million) and the U.K. ($2.1 million). The movie has now made $328 million overseas for a worldwide total north of $522 million.
No Strings Attached added nine territories and earned $10.9 million for a total of $21.9 million. It opened in fourth place in Germany with $1.6 million and sixth place in France with $2.8 million. Next weekend, the Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy will try to woo audiences in the U.K. and Mexico.
Yogi Bear scrounged up $10.4 million from 45 territories for a foreign tally of $77.9 million. French comedy hit Rien a Declarer (Nothing to Declare) wasn't far behind, adding $10.2 million for a total of $59.5 million. Through Sunday, the Dany Boon comedy had made just shy of $51 million in France and will likely became the highest-grossing movie there since Avatar on Monday or Tuesday.
True Grit performed decently by Western standards but was still unimpressive by any other measure: the Coen Brothers movie expanded in to 20 additional countries but business only rose to $10.1 million. One bright spot was its $1.5 million start in Italy, which was more than recent Westerns Appaloosa, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and 3:10 to Yuma made in their entire runs there. True Grit has made $29 million overseas and rides in to France, Germany and South Korea this weekend.
Four weeks ahead of its U.S. release, sci-fi comedy Paul opened to a strong $9 million in the U.K. Among past Pegg and Frost collaborations, that was much higher than Shaun of the Dead ($3 million) but a bit off from Hot Fuzz ($11.5 million).
