Around-the-World Roundup: 'Toy Story' Keeps Selling Overseas
Toy Story 3 continued to put up stellar numbers in its second weekend overseas, despite still not playing in a most of the largest territories. All other releases were distant runners-up, including newcomer Knight & Day, The A-Team, Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Adding seven territories, Toy Story 3 was down just seven percent to $40.2 million. This included a $6.2 million debut in Australia, which represents the third-best start ever for an animated movie. More impressive, though, was Toy Story 3's performance in Latin America: through its second weekend there, it's made $62.2 million, more than any other Disney animated movie in the region. Mexico contributed the most with a phenomenal $34 million, and Toy Story 3 will soon pass Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ($39 million) to become the country's highest-grossing animated title ever. Playing in just 35 percent of the international market, Toy Story 3 has generated $103.5 million, and opens in New Zealand and Turkey next weekend before rolling in to the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and more through the rest of July.
Opening in 12 markets, Knight & Day grossed $12.4 million on 2,241 screens. While it fell far short of a No. 1 opening domestically, it did top seven of its 12 foreign markets, including South Korea ($3.7 million), Russia ($3.3 million) and Taiwan ($1 million). The Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz action-comedy expands in to 14 additional markets next week.
In its third weekend The A-Team was off 46 percent, earning $7.6 million in 55 territories. Of note was a repeat number one finish in France, where it was down 48 percent to $1.4 million. Overall, The A-Team has made $46.3 million overseas.
Sex and the City 2 dipped 49 percent to $6.9 million for an overseas total of $171.6 million. Fellow Memorial Day launch Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time eased 40 percent to $6.1 million. While it's been somewhat of a disappointment domestically, Prince of Persia has earned $226 million overseas (which puts its worldwide total at $312 million).
