'Revolutions' Rounds Up $232M Opening Week
HOLLYWOOD (Box Office Mojo)—The Matrix Revolutions raked in $232,189,926 in its first week at virtually every market in the world, enough to already rank as the 195th highest grossing picture of all time.
In its first five days, Revolutions tallied $202,827,452 at 10,013 theaters in 109 markets—$119,037,452 of that from overseas and $83,790,000 from the United States and Canada. That was up from Warner Bros' $201.4 million estimate on Monday, inching past The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to claim the worldwide opening record. Two Towers pulled in $201.8 million from 29 markets on its way to $920.5 million.Overseas territories accounted for $138,612,214 or 60% of the opening week (12 IMAX screens in 9 countries contributed $581,007), in line with the franchise's established overseas-to-domestic ratio. Both The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded made around 62% of their worldwide grosses from overseas markets.
Domestically, Revolutions reeled in $93,577,712 in its first seven days, 41% lower than Reloaded but 110% above the first Matrix.
Reloaded holds the record for the biggest opening week at $158,242,565. Twelve other movies have crossed the $100 million mark in their first seven days—Spider-Man, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, The Two Towers, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, X2: X-Men United, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Rush Hour 2 and Bruce Almighty.
