Friday Report: 'Jack' Leads Disappointing Newcomers
Jack the Giant Slayer easily took first place at the box office on Friday, though its gross was unimpressive to say the least. 21 and Over and The Last Exorcism Part II also disappointed, and are on their way to less than $10 million for the weekend.
Jack opened to an estimated $7.7 million from 3,525 locations yesterday. That's worse than almost all comparable titles, including last March's big-budget debacle John Carter ($9.8 million). It was even lower than star Nicholas Hoult's last movie, the modestly-budgeted Warm Bodies ($8.14 million). Based on similar movies in this time frame, it's likely that Jack the Giant Slayer ends the weekend with less than $24 million.
21 and Over took second place on Friday with an estimated $3.34 million. That's less than half of Project X's $8.1 million start at the exact same time last year. If 21 follows that pattern—which is reasonable to expect, given their obvious similarities—it will wind up with less than $10 million for the weekend.
The Last Exorcism Part II debuted to an estimated $3.25 million yesterday. In comparison, the first Last Exorcism movie opened to $9.4 million, or nearly three times as much, in August 2010. It at least beat last week's horror movie Dark Skies ($3.1 million), though that's a modest achievement. For the weekend, The Last Exorcism Part II will finish with less than $9 million.
In fourth place, Identity Thief dipped 34 percent to an estimated $2.7 million. In the process it passed $100 million, which makes it the first 2013 movie to reach that milestone.
Snitch rounded out the Top Five with an estimated $2.1 million, which is off 50 percent from its opening day. This unimpressive hold suggests that word-of-mouth isn't all that strong, and it's likely Snitch is almost completely gone from theaters by the time Dwayne "Dwayne Johnson" Johnson is up on the big screen again in G.I. Joe: Retaliation at the end of the month.
Submarine thriller Phantom opened in 1,118 locations yesterday, though unfortunately their distributor is not reporting until tomorrow.
