Arthouse Audit: 'Jane Eyre,' 'Win Win' Solid Again
Jane Eyre and Win Win each underwent significant expansion over the weekend, yielding solid results though their long-term prospects remained murky. Meanwhile, a large slate of new releases was for the most part unsuccessful.
Jane Eyre doubled its theater count to 180 and grew 25 percent to $1.22 million. Its per-theater average of $6,751 was its lowest so far, though the average was still high enough to warrant further expansion. In fact, the Michael Fassbender-Mia Wasikowska period drama will look to improve on its $3.5 million total when it adds at least another 40 theaters this weekend.
Win Win leaped from 23 locations to 149, which resulted in a 145 percent increase to $1.14 million. Similar to Jane Eyre, the theater average took a drastic hit in the process, decreasing from $20,192 to $7,643. While further expansion plans aren't currently available, the movie is tracking almost identically to Fox Searchlight stable mate 127 Hours, a movie that made its way in to over 400 locations on its first try (it received a second promotional push after receiving a handful of Oscar nominations). Through its third weekend, Win Win's total now sits at $1.95 million.
Of Gods and Men dipped 34 percent to $219,018 after withdrawing from 22 locations, which was an odd move considering the movie's decent results thus far. Still, it marked the first weekend where it was ahead of Ed Helms comedy Cedar Rapids, which plummeted 49 percent to $208,923. The two movies have made $2.47 million and $6.49 million, respectively. French drama Certified Copy rounded out the limited Top Five, easing 24 percent to $146,209 at 55 locations for a total of $704,011.
South Korean comedy The Last Godfather (which stars Harvey Keitel) led the week's new releases with $101,921 at 58 locations for a poor $1,757 per-theater average. Director David Schwimmer's Trust, starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener, opened to $58,214 at 28 theaters, which was weak as well.
James Gunn's superhero movie Super grossed just $46,549 at 11 locations, a disappointing start considering stars Rainn Wilson and Elliot Page have been pushing the movie pretty hard in recent weeks.
Best Foreign Language Oscar winner In a Better World earned $33,058 at four locations for an okay per-theater average of $8,265. It looked even better next to Cat Run, which made an estimated $30,000 at 103 locations for a measly average of $291.
Documentary Queen to Play scored $28,092 at six theaters, while horror comedy Rubber opened to $16,346 at five venues. Italian drama Le Quattro Volte had the weekend's top per-theater average, opening to $16,192 at one location for a five-day gross of $20,914. Circo and Wrecked each debuted at one theater, earning $5,403 and $2,054, respectively.
