Disney Shifts 'Monsters Inc. 2,' Drops Two Others
Walt Disney Pictures announced a set of significant release schedule changes this morning, beginning with moving Monsters Inc. 2 up two weeks. It also removed two potentially high-profile movies from its calendar, along with adding a high school comedy to its spring 2011 roster.
Monsters Inc. 2 has been shifted from Nov. 16, 2012 to Nov. 2, 2012, shortly after The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part Two) staked its claim on the Nov. 16 date yesterday. About 15 minutes before Disney's announcement, Paramount Pictures pushed DreamWorks Animation's tentatively-titled The Guardians from Nov. 2, 2012 to Wed., Nov. 21, meaning all three currently scheduled Nov. 2012 movies have shifted dates in the past 24 hours.
More impactful than the minor Monsters Inc. 2 change, though, was Disney's removal of newt and Beauty and the Beast (3D) from the schedule. Pixar's newt was previously dated Summer 2012, though it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's been removed considering Pixar already has Brave slated for June 15, 2012. Beauty and the Beast (3D) had been set for release sometime in 2011.
While Disney removed two movies from its slate, it added one: Prom, which is now scheduled to open April 29, 2011. Directed by Joe Nussbaum (Sleepover, Sydney White), Prom is a comedy following a group of high school kids preparing for the titular night. Prom will face the remake of The Thing along with Anna Faris-Chris Evans comedy What's Your Number?.
In a final minor announcement, Disney has opted to hold preview screenings for Secretariat the evening of Saturday, Oct. 2, before the picture's nationwide opening on Friday, Oct. 8.
