Friday Report: 'Ninja Turtles' Shreds Competition on Friday
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dominated the box office on Friday with an impressive $25.6 million haul.
Turtles opened noticeably higher than G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which took in $22.2 million on essentially the same day back in 2009. Among Summer 2014 releases, Turtles is slightly above 22 Jump Street ($25.1 million) and Maleficent ($24.3 million).
Opening weekends have been very front-loaded this Summer, and reviews and word-of-mouth aren't particularly good for Turtles. Still, it does have a ton of appeal with younger audiences, which tends to help boost Saturday/Sunday returns. By Sunday, Turtles will likely have earned anywhere from $62 to $68 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy plummeted 67 percent to $12.3 million. That drop is identical to Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which fell 67 and 68 percent, respectively. This suggests that the strong reviews and word-of-mouth didn't give Guardians much of a bump. For the three-day weekend, the movie should wind up around $41 million.
Into The Storm took third place on Friday with an estimated $6.5 million. That's a bit lower than Final Destination 5 ($7.3 million), and is roughly on par with Snakes on a Plane ($6.4 million, including Thursday night). For the weekend, Into The Storm will earn at least $15 million.
At 2,023 theaters, The Hundred-Foot Journey earned $3.65 million on opening day. That's a fraction of August releases like Eat Pray Love ($8.5 million) and Julie & Julia. The Hundred-Foot Journey should end the weekend with around $10 million.
Step Up All In opened in fifth place with $2.84 million. In comparison, the last Step Up movie—the lowest-grossing one in the series so far—earned $4.9 million on opening day. For the weekend, the fifth installment in the dance franchise could wind up below $7 million.
Weekend Forecast
1. Turtles - $64 million
2. Guardians - $41 million
3. Into the Storm - $16.5 million
4. Hundred-Foot Journey - $10.5 million
5. Step Up All In - $7 million
