Arthouse Audit: The 'Kids' Are More Than 'All Right'
Cyrus led all limited releases for the third weekend in a row, though it showed signs of fatigue. That wasn't the case with The Kids Are All Right, which continued to play to packed theaters in its first minor expansion. The Girl Who Played with Fire, I Am Love and Winter's Bone all experienced slight declines, while a handful of minor new movies failed to incite any interest.
In its fifth weekend, Cyrus more than doubled its theater count to 446 but fell 15 percent to $1.09 million. With a weak per theater average of $2,451, Cyrus is unlikely to reach a mainstream audience. The John C. Reilly-Jonah Hill comedy has made $5.08 million thus far.
The Kids Are All Right was hot on Cyrus' heels with $1.06 million, though it played at less than one-tenth the number of locations (38) and scored an impressive per theater average of $28,009. In ten days, The Kids Are All Right has made $1.8 million.
In its second weekend, The Girl Who Played with Fire dipped 25 percent to $679,533 at 139 locations, which was good for 13th place on the overall chart. The sequel to the $9.5 million-grossing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has nabbed $2.02 million in ten days.
I Am Love grossed $415,112 at 140 locations, which represented an 18 percent decline. The Tilda Swinton drama is at $2.66 million through its fifth weekend. Sundance favorite Winter's Bone completed the limited Top Five, down 24 percent to $347,380 for a total of $2.66 million.
None of the new releases hit more than two theaters, and therefore barely had an impact. Foreign drama Kisses grabbed $15,485 at two locations, Mexican drama Alamar earned $7,668 at one theater for a five-day total of $9,640, and documentary Henri-Georves Clouzot's Inferno scored $3,981 at one theater. Bollywood import Udaan was the biggest loser, raking in a meager $2,715 at two theaters.
