Seven-Day Summary: 'Inception' Plants Itself in First Again
Inception topped a solid opening from Salt to lead the box office for the second week in a row, while Despicable Me continued to put up impressive numbers. Overall box office was up around five percent over the same period last year, when G-Force led with $49.4 million.

Down just 34 percent, Inception made $65.7 million in its second week for a total of $165.8 million. On Thursday, it passed Clash of the Titans to become distributor Warner Bros. highest-grossing movie of the year, and it's poised to cruise past the $200 million mark sometime next week.

While it didn't generate enough interest to top Inception, Salt raked in $51.6 million start in its first week. This was much lower than Wanted, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider among past Angelina Jolie action movies, though it did have basically the same initial attendance as the similarly-themed The Bourne Identity.

Despicable Me was off 28 percent to $37.2 million for a three-week total of $174.8 million. It's now set to become the fourth animated movie of the year to surpass $200 million, which is an excellent result for the first animated movie from Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice cemented itself as Jerry Bruckheimer's second disappointment of the summer, following Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ($89.6 million). Apprentice dropped 44 percent to $14.6 million, bringing its total to $47.6 million in 16 days.

Toy Story 3 kept plugging away, down 28 percent to $14.1 million. With a six-week total of $384.6 million, it's now the 11th highest-grossing movie of all-time, though it remains outside the Top 100 when adjusted for the 3D premium and ticket price inflation.

Ramona and Beezus was no Diary of a Wimpy Kid in its first week, grossing $12.7 million. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was down 46 percent to $11.5 million for a four-week total of $284.2 million and is on track to out-gross New Moon's $296.6 million. Finally, Grown Ups had another light dip, falling 27 percent to $11.4 million. With a $146.2 million tally, it's now star Adam Sandler's fourth highest-grossing movie and could make a run for his top grosser Big Daddy's $163.5 million.
