Around-the-World Roundup: 'Django' Leads for Third-Straight Weekend
For the third weekend in a row, Django Unchained led all movies at the overseas box office.
Writer-director Quentin Tarantino's "Southern" added $30.3 million from 65 markets for a new total of $158.4 million. It held on to first place in Germany and France for the third-straight weekend with $6.4 million and $4.9 million, respectively. It also repeated in Australia ($2.6 million), Italy ($2.1 million) and Spain ($1.8 million). Including its domestic performance, Django Unchained has now earned $309.1 million worldwide, and should top Inglourious Basterds ($321 million) by Friday.
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters expanded in to a handful of smaller markets and grossed $16.6 million this weekend. The movie has already taken in $63.9 million overseas, and will pass $100 million worldwide in the next few days.
In 43 territories, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln had its best weekend yet with $13.2 million. It had a very good $2.9 million start in France, and also continued doing decent business in the U.K. ($2.2 million) and Italy ($2.1 million). So far, Lincoln has made $32.6 million overseas, and this weekend it eclipsed $200 million worldwide.
Les Miserables continued its strong overseas run by adding $11.4 million from 40 markets this weekend. Its best opening came in Brazil where it took second place with $867,000. The movie has earned $198 million total so far, and still has to debut in another 27 markets.
Nearing the end of its run, Life of Pi added $10.5 million this weekend. It held nicely in Japan with $2.6 million in its second outing there; worldwide, Life of Pi is at nearly $550 million, which ranks 11th among 2012 movies.
Skyfall passed $50 million in China this weekend; to date, the international phenomenon has grossed $792.3 million overseas and nearly $1.1 billion worldwide.
