Friday Report: ‘Transformers’ Sequel Dominates
In its third day, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen maintained its blockbuster run, raking in an estimated $36.7 million on approximately 10,000 screens at 4,234 sites. That stands as the tenth highest-grossing Friday ever, but all movies ahead of it had Friday openings, giving the action sequel the record for biggest non-opening Friday gross. It ranks ahead of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Spider-Man 2 and The Matrix Reloaded on that front, although each of those pictures had higher attendance. Revenge of the Fallen's Friday included an estimated $2.6 million from 169 IMAX runs, and the picture has thus far made $8.9 million in the format.
With a $125.9 million total in three days, Revenge of the Fallen slotted in as the fourth highest-grossing three-day opening on record, behind The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, but, again, among movies that didn't open on a Friday, it grabbed the top spot. More importantly from a franchise perspective, it has grossed more than the previous Transformers did in its first four and a half days ($107.6 million).
Below Transformers, the sole new nationwide release on Friday, My Sister's Keeper, delivered an estimated $5.1 million at 2,606 sites, ranking fourth for the day. It fared better than most similar disease dramas.
Among holdovers, The Proposal took a typical hit, down 52 percent Friday-to-Friday to an estimated $6.1 million for a $56.7 million tally in eight days. The Hangover and Up had small drop-offs again. Hangover was off 37 percent to an estimated $5.3 million, lifting its total to $171.3 million in 22 days. Up was down 36 percent to over $3.9 million, bringing its tally to $241.1 million in 29 days. Year One, on the other hand, tumbled 76 percent to an estimated $2 million for a $28.5 million total in eight days.
