Around-the-World Roundup: 'Breaking Dawn' Earns Massive $199.5 Million Overseas
With an estimated $199.5 million haul, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 had the biggest day-and-date launch ever for a Twilight movie. Across its 61 markets Breaking Dawn Part 2 is tracking 38 percent above its predecessor, which ultimately earned a franchise-best $430.9 million. Including its $141.1 million domestic opening, Breaking Dawn Part 2 debuted to nearly $341 million worldwide this weekend, which ranks eighth all-time (and tops for a Twilight movie).
The fifth and final chapter in the Twilight saga debuted in first place across nearly all of its markets, including the U.K. ($25.1 million), Russia ($22 million), France ($17.5 million), Italy ($13.3 million), Australia ($12.5 million), Spain ($12 million) and South Korea ($7 million). It was also particularly strong in Latin America, where its openings were, on average, 57 percent higher than Breaking Dawn Part 1: in Brazil it scored $18.1 million and in Mexico it earned $12.2 million.
With debuts still on the way in Germany, Japan and (much further down the road) China, Breaking Dawn Part 2 is all-but-assured to be the highest-grossing entry in the Twilight franchise by the end of its run.
Foreign sensation Skyfall continued its extraordinary run this weekend with $49.5 million. It's now earned $507.8 million overseas and $669 million worldwide, which are both new records for the James Bond franchise ahead of 2006's Casino Royale ($432 million overseas, $599 million worldwide).
The movie's top market this weekend was Germany, which added $10.3 million in its third frame. It also continued to impress in Bond's native U.K. where the movie grossed $8.9 million for a new total of $133.4 million, and it's on its way to challenging Avatar's $150 million record there. Skyfall expands in to Australia and New Zealand next weekend, and reaches Japan at the beginning of December.
Thanks to Skyfall's huge contribution, Sony Pictures reached $4 billion worldwide for 2012, which is a new record for the studio.
Argo earned $8.7 million this weekend for a new total of $40.4 million. Holdover markets dipped just 29 percent on average, suggesting the movie is connecting well with international audiences.
A few days ahead of its U.S. debut, DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians opened to a mediocre $3.1 million in China. Aside from the U.S., the movie expands in to eight more markets, including Russia, next weekend.
It's been a long-time coming, but Ted has finally passed $500 million worldwide. The Seth MacFarlane comedy hit is now the second-highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever behind The Hangover Part II ($581.5 million).
