Around-the-World Roundup: 'Rango' Fends Off 'Battle: Los Angeles'
With a few significant openings and potent holds in key territories, Rango easily led the foreign box office in its second weekend. Battle: Los Angeles (or World Invasion, as its being called in most countries) had a decent start, while The King's Speech finally began to fade from the scene.
Rango grossed $24.1 million from 46 territories to bring its two-week total to $47.2 million. It opened in first place in Italy and Australia with $2.9 million and $2.8 million, respectively, and it was even more impressive in its holdover markets. The movie eased a light seven percent to $2.5 million in the United Kingdom, fell 18 percent to $2.2 million in Mexico and dipped just five percent to $1.9 million in Spain. Rango expands in to eight additional countries, including Russia, this weekend.
Battle: Los Angeles debuted to $16.7 million in 32 territories. It claimed the top spot in most of its major markets, including Russia ($4.5 million), South Korea ($3.1 million), the U.K. ($2.9 million) and India ($1.6 million). Despite the movie's setting and multicultural cast, however, Battle: Los Angeles only managed a third place finish in Mexico with $816,000.
Last week's winner The King's Speech fell 32 percent to $13.1 million to bring its foreign haul to a stellar $208.2 million. It held first place in Germany with $2.3 million and continued to steadily add to its coffers in France ($2 million) and the U.K. ($1.1 million). The movie's worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total now sits at $337.6 million, and, with its upcoming opening in South Korea, it still has a chance at reaching $400 million.
Torrente 4 opened to $11.7 million in Spain, which topped predecessor Torrente 3's $8.7 million 2005 debut. As a result, Torrente 4 ranked as the highest-grossing opening ever for a local title and fourth among all movies behind Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, The DaVinci Code and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Black Swan continued to make its presence known, grossing $10.7 million from 44 territories for a total of $165.6 million. Its top countries were France ($1.9 million), South Korea ($1.4 million) and Spain ($1.3 million). Adding in its domestic earnings, the Darren Aronofsky-directed ballet thriller has grossed over $271 million worldwide. Early in the weekend, it passed Knight & Day ($261.9 million) to become News Corp.'s second-highest-grossing 2010 movie, behind The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader($400.6 million).
The Adjustment Bureau generated $8.6 million in 31 markets. It held well enough in the U.K. ($1.5 million) and Australia ($1.4 million), though it had a poor seventh place start in Germany ($1.1 million). The movie's international total is now at $23.8 million, and it is set to expand in to Hong Kong and Taiwan next weekend.
Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused massive damage, displaced hundreds of thousands of people and resulted in at least a few thousand deaths. Naturally, the country's box office took a hit: holdovers all fell at least 60 percent, and Disney's Tangled had a weak $1.7 million opening.
