Around-the-World Roundup: 'Journey 2' Still Strong Overseas
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is quickly turning in to an early year hit at the overseas box office. The sequel once again topped the charts this weekend with $27.5 million from 43 markets for a total of $130 million. It added $9.5 million in China and $4.1 million in Russia, and opened in second in France with $3.1 million. Journey 2 is now only a few days away from passing the original Journey to the Center of the Earth's $140.3 million foreign total, and a $200 million finish seems well within reach. Based on available figures, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance finished in second with around $12.5 million. It was okay in the U.K. and France ($2.1 million in both markets) but was more successful in Mexico ($1.6 million) and Malaysia ($1.1 million). After a somewhat disappointing opening, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace's 3D re-release did little to save face this weekend. The movie fell 49 percent to $10.4 million, and has so far brought in a meager $37.5 million. Across all its releases, though, The Phantom Menace has now earned $997.6 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign), and by the end of the week it should become the 11th movie to ever pass $1 billion.

The Descendants continued its very impressive overseas run by adding $7.9 million for a total of $68.7 million. It's only major opening came in Italy, where it earned a decent $1.5 million.

Turkish historical epic Fetih 1453 (translated as Conquest 1453) opened to $7.8 million in four markets.
