Friday Report: 'Eclipse' Doesn't Jump But Easily Leads
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse handily topped the box office again on Friday, pulling in an estimated $28.6 million, which was more than The Last Airbender and Toy Story 3 combined.
In three days, Eclipse's total climbed to a stellar $121.3 million. By comparison, The Twilight Saga: New Moon had grossed $142.8 million at its three-day point, while the first Twilight had $69.6 million, though both pictures opened on a Friday.
Up only 18 percent from Thursday, Eclipse is unlikely to top Spider-Man 2's Independence Day opening weekend record of $88.2 million. Spider-Man 2, which also had a Wednesday, June 30, launch back in 2004, made $32.5 million on its first Friday, up 36 percent from Thursday. Though its $96.7 million Wednesday-to-Friday gross was less than Eclipse's, its attendance was higher.
The Last Airbender struck second place with an estimated $16.6 million at 3,169 locations, bringing its tally to $33 million in two days. That's three and a half times what Dragonball Evolution made in its entire run. Due in part to being in its second day, Airbender was up a mere two percent from Thursday.
Toy Story 3 generated $10.5 million, down 42 percent from last Friday. That was the biggest third Friday of the Toy Story franchise, even adjusted for ticket price inflation. With $269.3 million in 15 days, it passed The Incredibles ($261.4 million) to become Pixar's third highest-grossing picture yet.
Grown Ups continued to behave like a typical Adam Sandler comedy. It grabbed an estimated $6.9 million, off 52 percent Friday-to-Friday. Its $65.5 million eight-day tally was about the same as Click through the same point (although with less attendance).
Any delayed interest in Knight & Day hasn't kicked in, just middling business as usual. The Tom Cruise vehicle nabbed an estimated $3.35 million, down 47 percent Friday-to-Friday. In ten days, it has earned a relatively modest $38.7 million, which was less than Mission: Impossible III's $47.7 million three-day start.
