Academy to Screen Best Picture Nominee 'The Graduate'
Beverly Hills, CA—A newly-restored print of 1967 Best Picture nominee The Graduate will be screened by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, May 6, at 8 p.m., in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The film's Academy Award-winning director, Mike Nichols, will be the evening's special guest.
Dustin Hoffman stars as shy Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate who returns home with an uncertain future. As he tries to navigate the alien world of adulthood, he begins an affair with Mrs. Robinson (played by Anne Bancroft), the wife of his father's business partner. That relationship is made all the more complicated by the fact that Benjamin later meets and being falling in love with Elaine (Katharine Ross), Mrs. Robinson's daughter. Songs composed by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Art Garfunkle provide an effective and memorable musical layer to the wryly-told story.
Hoffman, Bancroft and Ross all earned Oscar nominations for their performances. Produced by Lawrence Turman, The Graduate also earned nominations for Cinematography (Robert Surtees) and Writing (Screenplay based on material from another medium: Calder Willingham, Buck Henry).
The Academy screening will be the premiere of a print newly restored by Sony Pictures Entertainment, in collaboration with MGM and Studio Canal.
Tickets for The Graduate are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members, and go on sale beginning April 18. They may be purchased in person at the Academy during regular business hours, by mail, or on the night of the screening, if still available, when the doors open at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
