Arthouse Audit: 'Cyrus' Creeps Up the Chart
Cyrus expanded and led all limited releases over the weekend, creeping in to the overall Top Ten. I Am Love and Solitary Man weren't far behind, while newcomers I Hate Luv Storys and Love Ranch failed to woo much attention.
Cyrus added 60 theaters for a total of 77, grossing $774,472 for the three-day weekend ($1.1 million over the four-day holiday weekend). Its $10,058 per-theater average and Top Ten finish indicate that Cyrus will receive a much larger expansion in the coming weeks. While its current pace is relatively solid, Cyrus has still performed at a fraction of the level of Little Miss Sunshine ($59.9 million) and also has lagged behind (500) Days of Summer ($32.4 million), among fellow summer Fox Searchlight releases. Through its third weekend, the John C. Reilly-Jonah Hill comedy has made $1.8 million.
I Am Love grabbed a three-day weekend gross of $528,877 ($722,544 for the four-day). Playing at 80 locations, the Tilda Swinton drama has thus far earned $1.3 million. After leading all limited releases last weekend, Solitary Man held steady, up four percent for the three-day weekend to $498,484. Add in strong Monday grosses and Solitary Man has made $2.9 million through its seventh weekend and is still tracking ahead of Anchor Bay's last minor success City Island.
Winter's Bone added 13 theaters and remained even, grossing $430,329 for the three-day weekend ($598,699 for the four-day). Overall the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner has made $1.9 million since opening in mid-June. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work also expanded a bit, though it was down nine percent to $328,860 for the three-day weekend. Through Monday the documentary has made $1.6 million and should pass You Kill Me sometime in the next week or two to become distributor IFC's highest-grossing release in around four years.
None of the new limited releases were impressive. Romantic comedy I Hate Luv Storys grossed $375,297 at 85 locations over the three-day weekend, which qualifies as the lowest opening for a Bollywood movie since Veer in January. Through its first six days, I Hate Luv Storys has made $535,273. Taylor Hackford's Love Ranch, which stars Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci as a married couple who open the first legal brothel in Nevada, made just $44,220 at 11 theaters over the three-day weekend and has grossed $74,776 in its first six days. Finally, Film Movement's documentary Only When I Dance barely registered with a mere $2,923 at one theater over the four-day weekend.
