Big Hero 6
Release Date: November 7th
Studio: Disney
Genre: Animation
Director: Don Hall, Chris Williams
Writers: Don Hall, Jordan Roberts
Cast: Voices of Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Genesis Rodriguez, Jamie Chung, T.J. Miller, Alan Tudyk, James Cromwell, Damon Wayans Jr., Maya Rudolph
Studio Description: From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Big Hero 6, an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax, and prodigy Hiro Hamada, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.
Forecast: Big Hero 6 is the latest movie from Disney Animation Studios, which has had a resurgence in recent years thanks to the success of Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and, of course, last year's Frozen.
Frozen earned an exceptional $400.7 million, which is around twice as much as Tangled ($200.8 million) and Wreck-It Ralph ($189.4 million). While Frozen likely elevated the Disney Animation brand to another level, it's hard to imagine that Big Hero 6 will be able to recreate that movie's success.
Still, Disney is doing a great job selling Big Hero 6 to the broadest possible audience. Instead of centering around the titular superhero team, marketing has focused on the movie's loveable, humorous robot named Baymax. The character's unique design and eccentric behavior calls to mind supporting characters from recent animated hits Despicable Me (The Minions) and Frozen (Olaf).
At a minimum, Big Hero 6 seems poised to match Wreck-It Ralph's $189.4 million. On the high end, it could match Disney/Pixar's The Incredibles, which opened on the same weekend a decade ago and went on to earn $261.4 million. Look for it to wind up somewhere in between.
Forecast: $215 million
Similar Movies: Guardians of the Galaxy, The LEGO Movie, Frozen, Monsters University, Wreck-It Ralph, Despicable Me, Tangled, Monsters Vs. Aliens, WALL-E, The Incredibles
