Around-the-World Roundup: 'Titanic 3D' Opens to Record-Setting $67 Million in China
A full month ahead of its U.S. release Battleship set sail overseas, though it was a much older ship that wound up claiming first place at the foreign box office this weekend.
Titanic 3D led the way this weekend with an incredible $98.9 million, which brought its foreign total to $157.1 million (a new record for a 3D re-release). Over two-thirds of that gross came in China, where Titanic 3D has amassed an incredible $67 million since debuting there on Tuesday. According to Fox, that tops last Summer's Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($56 million) for highest opening ever in China. It's also more than Titanic made in its entire 1998 run ($44 million), which pretty clearly demonstrates the extent to which the Chinese market has expanded in the past decade.
Titanic 3D also had decent openings in Mexico ($1.9 million) and Brazil ($1.75 million), and continued to play well in Russia ($3.2 million), the U.K., Italy, and France (all just under $2.9 million). Worldwide, the re-release has made over $200 million, and sometime this weekend the movie's overall total crossed the $2 billion mark.
On practically any other April weekend, Battleship would have taken first place, but the board game adaptation had to settle for second with a respectable $55.2 million from 26 territories. According to distributor Universal Pictures International, the movie opened 70 percent ahead of John Carter and 72 percent ahead of Wrath of the Titans across the same markets, though those percentages are based off Universal's higher $58 million Sunday estimate.
The movie played particularly well in Asia, where it opened on top in South Korea ($8 million) and Taiwan ($3.4 million), and was also strong in Japan ($4.9 million). Battleship also claimed first place in the U.K. ($6.1 million), Germany ($5 million), Australia ($4.2 million), Spain ($3 million) and Italy ($3 million), and had a very solid second place opening in France ($3.8 million). The movie should be in for a major boost when it expands in to 24 additional markets, including China and Russia, this upcoming weekend.
In its fourth weekend, The Hunger Games fell 37 percent to $16.6 million. It added $2.4 million in Australia and in the U.K., and $2.1 million in Germany. That brings the movie's international total to $194.5 million, and it easily became the first movie in 2012 to pass $500 million worldwide.
After leading for two consecutive weeks, Wrath of the Titans fell to fourth place with an estimated $15.3 million from 63 markets. The movie's total reached $187.1 million, and with its only remaining major market (Japan) opening on Saturday, Wrath has absolutely zero chance of coming anywhere close to matching its predecessor's $330 million overseas total.
Mirror Mirror added an estimated $14 million this weekend for a total of at least $64 million. Meanwhile, American Reunion grossed $12.1 million to brings its total to $41.2 million. Both of these titles have a handful of significant markets left to open, and they each have a solid chance of reaching $100 million overseas.
Coinciding with its domestic debut, The Cabin in the Woods earned $3.6 million in five foreign markets. It had a solid third place opening in the U.K. ($2.5 million), though it was less impressive in Russia ($1 million).
