Around-the-World Roundup: 'Titanic 3D' Can't Stop 'Wrath'
Wrath of the Titans held on to the top spot at the foreign box office over Easter weekend, though Titanic 3D opened across most of the world and racked up a very solid figure as well. The Hunger Games also hung in well overseas despite paling in comparison to its domestic tally, and American Reunion had the best start yet for the American Pie franchise.
Wrath of the Titans fell 45 percent to an estimated $42.1 million from 61 markets. It hung on to first place in Brazil ($3.5 million) and Mexico ($2.96 million), though its top market was likely Russia (official data is not currently available). The movie has now earned $151.6 million overseas, and its worldwide tally has broken the $200 million barrier.
Titanic 3D opened to $35.2 million from 84 territories. Its biggest market was Russia with $5.2 million, which is actually slightly more than Titanic originally made there in 1998 (that demonstrates just how much that market has expanded in the past decade). The 3D re-release also took first place in the United Kingdom ($4.36 million) and Italy ($3 million), and had solid openings in Germany ($3.4 million), France ($3 million), Australia ($1.9 million), Spain ($1.8 million), South Korea ($1.6 million), India ($1.2 million) and Japan ($1.2 million). All in, this was a significant improvement over Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace's 3D re-release, which only opened to $20.5 million in February despite reaching more markets initially.
Titanic 3D debuts in China today (April 10), and it will likely wind up being the movie's highest-grossing market. It also reaches Brazil and Mexico on Friday, and it should ultimately add over $100 million to the movie's already-remarkable foreign tally. As it stands now, Titanic's new overseas total is $1.279 billion, which ranks second all-time behind Avatar.

The movie's only major opening came in South Korea, where it wound up in second place with $2.1 million. Including domestic earnings, the movie has now made over $464 million, and it still has openings in China, Italy, and Spain to look forward to over the next four weeks.

It was less impressive in Germany, though, as it only opened to $1.5 million. Relativity's Snow White movie has now earned over $40 million in foreign territories.
French family adventure Sur la piste du marsupilami opened to $11.9 million in three markets this weekend. Most of that came from a strong $10.6 million first place debut in France.
Action thriller The Cold Light of Day, which stars future Man of Steel Henry Cavill alongside Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, was supposed to open this weekend in the U.S. but was recently pushed back to September. However, a handful of foreign markets kept this release date, including Spain ($1 million, including previews) and the U.K. (a weak $800,000). The movie is set for limited release in the U.S. on September 7.
