Around-the-World: 'Guardians' Passes 'Captain America,' 'Spider-Man' Sequels
Guardians of the Galaxy was back on top of the international box office this weekend; the movie added $23.1 million for a new total of $405 million.
Most of that came from China, where Guardians eased 28 percent to $22.3 million. Reports that bad subtitles were causing poor word-of-mouth seem to be unfounded. To date, Guardians has earned $69 million in China, and has a legitimate shot at ultimately reaching $100 million.
The 10th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now grossed $733 million worldwide, which is ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With Italy on the way next weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy is guaranteed to ultimately move up to second place for the year ahead of Maleficent ($757 million).
Dracula Untold continued to do solid business overseas. Playing in 55 markets, the movie added $22.5 million for a new total of $95.7 million. In its second frame in Russia, it added $4.4 million for a total of $16.7 million. The movie expands in to Brazil and Spain next weekend.
Gone Girl earned $20.1 million this weekend, which brings its international total to $94.4 million (over $200 million worldwide). In the U.K., it eased 23 percent to $3.9 million; in Australia, it dipped 25 percent to $2.9 million. The movie still has South Korea, Italy and Japan on the way, and remains on track to easily surpass The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ($128 million and $130 million).
Over two months after its U.S. debut, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles finally expanded in to Europe this weekend. It had an impressive $7.7 million launch in the U.K., and was also solid in France ($4.1 million), Germany ($3.6 million) and Spain ($1.5 million).
Overall, it added $20 million for a new total of $185.5 million. The movie reaches China at the end of the month, and will eventually open in Japan as well (February).
Annabelle earned $19.6 million this weekend, which brings its total to $92.6 million. According to Warner Bros., this is roughly on par with The Conjuring through the same point in its release. On Thursday, the movie expands in to Mexico.
The Maze Runner continued its strong international run this weekend. The movie took first place in France with $5.2 million, which is noticeably higher than the first Hunger Games ($3.8 million). So far, The Maze Runner has earned $161.5 million; with China on the way, this could theoretically wind up near $250 million total.
Coinciding with its domestic debut, The Book of Life opened to $8.2 million from 19 markets. It got off to a good start in Mexico ($3.7 million), and Brazil ($1.9 million); next weekend, it expands in to the U.K. and France.
