Friday Report: Denzel's 'Equalizer' Dominates With $12.6 Million
The Equalizer got off to a strong start on Friday, while The Boxtrolls had one of the best stop-motion animation debuts ever.
At 3,236 theaters, The Equalizer opened to an impressive $12.6 million. That ranks third all-time for star Denzel Washington behind American Gangster ($15.9 million) and Safe House ($13.6 million). It's also well above last Summer's 2 Guns ($9.9 million), which had a strong co-lead in Mark Wahlberg. For the weekend, The Equalizer is on track to gross at least $35 million.
The Maze Runner added $5.18 million on Friday, which is off 54 percent from opening day. That's a very solid hold for a young-adult adaptation; in comparison, Divergent fell 64 percent at the same point. For the weekend, The Maze Runner will likely earn around $17 million.
Opening at 3,464 theaters, The Boxtrolls earned an estimated $4.93 million on Friday. That's above fellow Laika Animation titles ParaNorman ($4.6 million) and Coraline ($4.5 million). If The Boxtrolls follows the same pattern as past family-friendly September releases, it will finish the weekend with at least $17 million.
This is Where I Leave You eased 43 percent to $2.2 million, which brings its eight-day total to $17.7 million. The movie's appeal among older audiences suggests it will continue to hold well in the coming weeks; it now looks like a safe bet to top $35 million.
No Good Deed fell 54 percent to $1.35 million. Through 15 days, the Idris Elba/Taraji P. Henson thriller has banked $43.4 million.
A Walk Among the Tombstones plummeted 73 percent to $1.3 million. That's a steeper Friday-to-Friday drop than notoriously front-loaded crime dramas The Counselor (down 67 percent) and Killing Them Softly (down 65 percent). The Liam Neeson movie has now earned $17.9 million, and could have trouble reaching $30 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy added $1.02 million yesterday, which brings its total to $316.4 million. On Sunday, it will pass the first Iron Man ($318.4 million), moving it up to third all-time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (behind The Avengers and Iron Man 3).
Weekend Projections
1. The Equalizer - $36 million
2. The Boxtrolls - $17.5 million
3. The Maze Runner - $17 million
