Around-the-World Roundup: 'Rio' Continues to Soar Overseas
Along with scoring the top opening weekend of 2011 domestically, Rio posted another huge weekend at the foreign box office. The Blue Sky Animation movie grossed $55.4 million, bringing its foreign total to $130.9 million, which moved it ahead of The Green Hornet as the year's highest-grossing movie overseas. Add in its solid domestic performance and Monday and Tuesday international grosses, and Rio has made just over $191 million worldwide.
Rio maintained its altitude thanks in part to a handful of positive openings. It took first place in France with $4.4 million and snagged a decent $2.6 million start in Italy. It also earned an impressive $1 million in Venezuela, excluding last weekend's successful preview screenings.
While the openers performed well enough, it was the above-average strength of the holdover markets that drove Rio's box office. The movie was off a light average of 23 percent in its top eight returning territories, and, when one removes notoriously front-loaded Russia, that average drops to just 11 percent. Brazil led the way with $7.5 million and was followed by Russia ($5.7 million), Mexico ($4 million) and Australia ($3.2 million). The movie was actually up a bit to $2.7 million in the United Kingdom and eased 11 percent to $2.3 million in Germany. It also added $2.9 million in China and $1.4 million in Spain.
With many schools on vacation through the Easter holiday, Rio is well on its way to passing $200 million overseas in the next week or two.
On the same weekend it disappointed in its domestic debut, Scream 4 opened in 30 foreign territories and earned $17.9 million. It took first place in the U.K. with $3.4 million, but it was behind reigning champion Rio in all of its other territories. The horror sequel took second place in France ($4.3 million), Russia ($2.4 million) and Brazil ($1.6 million) and had quiet starts in Australia (fourth place with $1.9 million) and Italy (fifth place with less than $800,000). All three previous Scream movies grossed over $70 million overseas, and, with a handful of major markets left to open, there's a reasonable chance Scream 4 can reach that level as well.
Hop started to show the faintest signs of life ahead of the Easter holiday. It expanded in to another 14 territories and had its best weekend yet at $9.1 million. The movie debuted in second place in Mexico with $1.8 million and in fifth place in Spain with $730,000. More importantly, though, it was up 44 percent in Australia ($2.2 million) and 28 percent in the U.K. ($1.3 million). Hop has tallied $28.2 million overseas for a worldwide total north of $112 million, and it's set to add another nine territories, including Brazil and Hong Kong, over Easter weekend.
Sucker Punch added $7.8 million from 54 markets for a total of $43 million. It got off to a solid start in China with $3.1 million. In Japan, though, it debuted in seventh place with under $1 million, which was terrible considering the way the Japanese usually turn out for movies with video game asthetics (Resident Evil: Afterlife, for example, had a three-day opening of over $13 million last year).
Limitless rounded out the Top Five by grossing $7 million. It had a decent $1.4 million opening in Italy, but didn't fare so well in Germany (less than $1 million). The thriller has so far earned $42 million overseas for a worldwide total of $112 million.
