Around-the-World Roundup: 'Croods' Opens to $62.4 Million Overseas
Coinciding with its solid domestic debut, The Croods opened in around 60 percent of the international marketplace and scored a very good $62.4 million. With the Easter holidays coming up, the movie is well-positioned to be an overseas hit for DreamWorks Animation and Fox International.
Including lucrative previews, Russia and Mexico were the highest-grossing territories for The Croods with $12.7 million and $8.7 million, respectively. It also performed well in the U.K. ($8.1 million), Brazil ($4.2 million), Germany ($4.2 million), Italy ($4.1 million) and Spain ($3.3 million). Among these major markets, the 3D share was highest in Germany (78 percent) and Russia (74 percent) and lowest in Mexico (40 percent) and Spain (20 percent).
The Croods expands in to 19 more territories, including Australia, this upcoming weekend. Based on this start, it's reasonable to expect The Croods to earn at least as much as How to Train Your Dragon ($277.3 million), and it could even get lose to Rio ($341 million).
Without adding any new markets, Oz The Great and Powerful fell over 53 percent to an estimated $21.7 million. To date, the movie has earned $178.8 million; even with Easter holidays and an opening in China on the way, it still looks like the movie will struggle to reach $300 million, which has to be slightly disappointing.
Thanks to solid second place starts in Russia ($6.9 million) and the U.K. ($2.4 million), Jack the Giant Slayer had its best weekend yet with $20 million. Still, the movie has only grossed $61.4 million so far, and there's no chance it's going to earn over $200 million overseas like last year's mega-budget disasters John Carter and Battleship.
A Good Day to Die Hard expanded in to its final major market this weekend and added $11.9 million. That market was Australia, where the movie opened in first place with $4.1 million (a slight improvement over Live Free or Die Hard). It also hung on in China, where it earned $5.9 million for a solid total of $27.5 million. To date, the fifth Die Hard movie has earned $220.8 million, and will end its run close to its predecessor's $249 million.
Over Easter weekend, G.I. Joe: Retaliation debuts in at least 30 markets including Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Spain and the U.K. The first G.I. Joe earned $152 million overseas, and with help from Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis it's likely that Retaliation grosses noticeably more.
