Friday Report: 'Rio' Surges, 'Madea' Slims
On Good Friday, Rio remained perched atop the box office, edging out the latest Tyler Perry movie. The animated comedy drew an estimated $10.8 million (around 55 percent of which from 3D presentations), and the holiday helped it increase four percent over its Friday opening last week. It made slightly less than How to Train Your Dragon's $11 million on Good Friday last year and was in the same range as Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! on Good Friday 2008, though its total trailed both titles. With $65.2 million in eight days, though, Rio extended its lead over Rango ($51 million) and Hop ($52 million) through the same point.
Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family landed smack dab in the middle of his last two Good Friday debuts. The third Madea-titled movie mustered an estimated $10.5 million at 2,288 locations, grossing more than Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns ($8.1 million) on Good Friday 2008 but less than Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? ($12.2 million) last year. It also declined from the previous Madea movies: Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail opened to $14.7 million in 2009, while Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion started at $10.5 million in 2006.
Water for Elephants picked up an estimated $7 million at 2,817 locations, indicating a start within the average range of comparable titles. It was a far cry from Dear John and even behind The Time Traveler's Wife, but it doubled the first day gross of the last non-Twilight Robert Pattinson vehicle Remember Me.
The weekend's other new nationwide release, African Cats, nabbed an estimated $3.3 million at 1,220 locations. That landed between the Earth Day launches of its past two Disneynature predecessors, Earth (2009) ($4 million) and Oceans ($2.5 million).
Thanks to its holiday theme, Hop bounced back in a big way, jumping 109 percent from last Friday to an estimated $4.9 million. That lifted its total to $92.9 million in 22 days.
Scream 4 was the big loser, plummeting 67 percent to an estimated $2.7 million for a $26.8 million total in eight days. On the other hand, Insidious held well again, off nine percent to an estimated $2.1 million for a $40.9 million sum in 22 days, as did Source Code and Hanna.
