Around-the-World Roundup: 'G.I. Joe' Conquers Overseas Box Office
Thanks to the addition of 3D ticket prices and international stars Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, G.I. Joe: Retaliation opened significantly higher than its predecessor at the overseas box office this weekend.
The action sequel grossed an estimated $80.3 million from around 75 percent of the international marketplace, which is the top opening of the year so far. It took first place in Russia ($8.8 million), South Korea ($6.2 million), Mexico ($5.8 million), Germany ($4.3 million), Australia ($3.9 million) and France ($3.2 million). It also wound up in second place behind The Croods in the U.K. ($4.2 million) and Spain ($2.6 million), and was a little underwhelming in Italy ($1.7 million).
According to Paramount, this debut is nearly double the first movie's opening haul across similar markets. It's also around 25 percent ahead of A Good Day to Die Hard and Wrath of the Titans. Using these comparisons, G.I. Joe: Retaliation should be on its way to between $250 and $300 million overseas, which is way up from the first movie's $152.3 million.
The Croods had another great weekend with $51.7 million from 58 markets. Its top territory was Russia once again with $6.1 million, followed by the U.K. at $5 million. Its only major opening came in Australia, where it scored a solid $4.9 million. Through Monday, The Croods has earned $242 million worldwide, and should pass Rise of the Guardians ($304 million) by next Sunday.
Jack the Giant Slayer had its highest-grossing weekend yet with an estimated $25 million from 57 territories. It had a decent $6.75 million seven-day start in China, and also had modest debuts in France ($2 million), Brazil ($1.9 million) and Italy ($1.4 million). To date, it has earned $96.3 million, and will be lucky to crack $150 million by the end of its run.
Now playing in 100 percent of the international marketplace, Oz The Great and Powerful added $22.2 million this weekend for a new total of $214 million. It now appears likely that Oz will wind up with around $300 million overseas, which is less than half of Alice in Wonderland's $690 million haul.
Coinciding with its weak domestic debut, The Host opened in over 20 foreign markets and earned around $9 million. It grossed a light $1.5 million in the U.K., and failed to crack $1 million in Australia, Brazil and Italy.
Fox released animated movie Dragon Ball Z in Japan this weekend, and it took first place with a very good $7.3 million. Meanwhile, they also released Danny Boyle's Trance in the U.K. where it earned $2.4 million. The movie opens at four locations in the U.S. this coming weekend.
