Around-the-World Roundup: 'Oz' Opens to $69.9 Million Overseas
Coinciding with its domestic launch, Oz The Great and Powerful opened in most foreign markets as well this weekend. While it got off to a fine start in most areas, its grosses paled in comparison to 2010's Alice in Wonderland.
Oz earned an estimated $69.9 million from 46 territories, which represent 81 percent of the foreign marketplace. Its top territory by-far was Russia with $14.6 million*, which is narrowly ahead of Alice in Wonderland's $13.8 million. Otherwise, it trailed Alice in the U.K. ($5.6 million), Mexico ($5.2 million) and Australia ($4.9 million). It also lagged in Italy ($3.8 million), Brazil ($3.7 million), Germany ($3.7 million), Japan ($3.6 million) and Spain ($2.6 million).
These numbers are nothing to scoff at, but at the same time they add up to about half of Alice in Wonderland's openings across the same territories. Alice wound up with over $690 million overseas; it now looks like Oz will be lucky to gross more than $350 million.
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters continued its surprising foreign run by adding an estimated $11.5 million this weekend. Its highest-grossing market remained Germany with $3.3 million, and it also got off to a fine $2.8 million third place start in France. To date, the 3D action movie has earned $140.9 million overseas, and it will pass $200 million worldwide by Friday.
Without any new markets, A Good Day to Die Hard plummeted to just under $9 million. The movie has so far earned $176.1 million; it opens in China next weekend, though it's unlikely that will be enough to get it close to its predecessor's $250 million.
Winding down its foreign run, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey added $4.6 million in China for a new total of $45.4 million there. Worldwide, the movie now ranks 14th all-time with $1.01 billion.
On Monday, Life of Pi passed $600 million worldwide. It's the highest-grossing of the 2012 Best Picture nominees, and is a resounding success for 20th Century Fox.
