Friday Report: 'Other Guys' in Active Duty, 'Inception' Hangs On
The Other Guys wasn't an also-ran on its opening day, leading the Friday box office and doubling the start of second-place Step-Up 3D. Inception continued to leave its mark, though, delivering its smallest Friday-to-Friday drop yet.
Hitting approximately 4,900 screens at 3,651 locations, The Other Guys took in an estimated $13.2 million, more than doubling the first day gross of the last cop comedy Cop Out. Other Guys also gave star Will Ferrell his second highest-grossing opening day behind Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, although, in terms of estimated attendance, it was closer to Step Brothers and trailed Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Blades of Glory.
Step Up 3-D slid in with an estimated $6.6 million on around 3,000 screens at 2,435 locations, which was, at first glance, comparable to Step Up 2 the Street's $6.4 million albeit well behind the first Step Up's $8.7 million. However, 81 percent of Step Up 3D's business came from higher-priced 3D presentations at 1,826 locations, meaning that its attendance level was considerably down on its predecessors.
Off only 33 percent Friday-to-Friday, Inception drew an estimated $5.5 million and will overtake Step Up 3-D to rank second for the weekend as a whole. Its dip was smallest among all major nationwide holdovers, and its total stands at a stellar $214.7 million in 22 days.
Dinner for Schmucks slipped 60 percent from last Friday, grossing an estimated $3.4 million and increasing its total to $39.6 million in eight days. The comedy held better than Funny People at the same point last summer and slightly worse than Step Brothers at the same time of year in 2008. Fellow second-weekend release Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore was down 49 percent to an estimated $2.15 million for a measly $21.7 million in eight days, while Charlie St. Cloud fell 69 percent to an estimated $1.72 million, lifting its total to $20.5 million in eight days.
Salt had another common decline, off 49 percent to an estimated $3 million, which increased its sum to $83.9 million in 15 days. Meanwhile, Despicable Me held well again, easing 38 percent to an estimated $2.9 million, upping its total to $202.9 million in 29 days.
