Friday Report: 'No Good Deed' Defeats 'Dolphin Tale' Sequel
No Good Deed dominated the box office on Friday, while Dolphin Tale 2 opened below its predecessor. Meanwhile, crime drama The Drop exceeded expectations with a fourth place debut.
Playing at 2,175 theaters, No Good Deed opened in the top spot with $8.8 million. That's a strong result for this modestly-budgeted thriller; among similar movies, that's in between Obsessed ($11.2 million) and The Call ($6.2 million). For the weekend, No Good Deed is on track to earn between $22 and $25 million.
Dolphin Tale 2 took second place with $4.27 million. That's a bit lower than the first Dolphin Tale, which opened to $5.1 million around the same time in 2011. For the weekend, it will likely take in around $16 million.
Even with two major new movies entering the marketplace, Guardians of the Galaxy still held strong; the movie was off just 23 percent to $2.09 million. Guardians will pass the $300 million mark on Saturday, making it the first movie to do so since Frozen back in January.
Playing at just 809 theaters, The Drop opened in fourth place with a very solid $1.46 million. The crime drama, which features James Gandolfini's final performance, should earn around $4 million this weekend.
Let's Be Cops rounded out the Top Five with $1.27 million. To date, the buddy comedy has earned $69.9 million.
