Around-the-World Roundup: 'Twilight' Repeats, 'Skyfall' Nears $800 Million Worldwide
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Skyfall continued to rack up impressive grosses overseas this weekend, while Life of Pi got off to a very good start in a few Asian markets.
The fifth and final Twilight movie earned $104.2 million in its second weekend. As expected, it was hit pretty hard in holdover markets (around 62 percent on average), though its gross was buoyed by a strong $16.9 million opening in Germany (a franchise record). The movie has already made $365.5 million overseas, which puts it just $65 million away from passing Breaking Dawn Part 1 ($430.9 million) to set a new franchise record.
Thanks to Breaking Dawn's great weekend, Lionsgate was able to cross $1 billion in international grosses this weekend for the first time in its history. Other major contributors to this figure were The Hunger Games and The Expendables 2.
Skyfall added around $44 million this weekend for an overseas total of $571.4 million. It opened in Australia, where it scored Sony's best-ever opening with $12.9 million. It also brought its total to $144.5 million in the U.K., and should pass Avatar's $150 million record next weekend. Worldwide, Skyfall is a bit shy of $800 million, and should be able to get past $900 million with its existing markets; it's up to Japan and China to get the movie to $1 billion.
Life of Pi opened in four Asian territories and earned $23.5 million this weekend. It had a great first place debut in China with $16.1 million, and had one of the biggest non-franchise openings ever in India with $3.6 million. It was also strong in Taiwan ($2.3 million) and Hong Kong ($1.45 million). Ang Lee's adaptation of the widely-read novel expands in to Spain and a few more Asian markets next weekend, and will reach most of the rest of the world just before Christmas.
After a mediocre debut in China last weekend, Rise of the Guardians expanded in to a few more territories this weekend and had a bit more success. Overall it earned $10.5 million, with a solid $5.85 million start in Russia leading the way. The DreamWorks Animation holiday flick has so far grossed $13.5 million, and expands to most of the rest of the world—including Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea and the U.K.—this coming weekend.
Coinciding with the upcoming end of the world (or so the Mayan calendar says), Sony re-released 2012 in 3D in China. The movie earned a solid $7.5 million, which brings its total there to over $75 million.
Silver Linings Playbook made its overseas debut this weekend and grossed $3.35 million from 6 markets. Its biggest markets were Russia ($1.7 million) and the U.K. ($1.5 million), both of which aren't bad tallies for a romantic comedy with a heavy emphasis on American football.
