Around-the-World Roundup: 'Oz' Rules Again, 'Die Hard' Scores in China
Oz The Great and Powerful led the overseas box office again this weekend, though it's becoming clear that the movie isn't in the same league as 2010's Alice in Wonderland. Meanwhile, openings in China helped prop up the foreign grosses of the fifth installments in the Die Hard and Resident Evil franchises.
Oz added an estimated $46.6 million in its second outing. It opened in a few new markets including France, where it took first place with $5.8 million. In comparison, Alice in Wonderland debuted to over $15 million.
On average, Oz's holdover markets fell 47 percent. Its top territory last week was Russia, and this weekend it plummeted 66 percent to $4.9 million there.
The movie is now playing in 85 percent of the international marketplace, but has so far grossed a somewhat light $136.8 million. While that would be good for most movies, it suggests that Oz will have a tough time reaching $300 million overseas, which is disappointing considering similar movie Alice in Wonderland closed with over $690 million.
A Good Day to Die Hard debuted to a very good $15.7 million in China this weekend. That helped push the movie's total past $200 million; it if hangs on in China and performs well when it reaches Australia, it could still get near its predecessor's $250 million total.
Jack the Giant Slayer expanded to 25 markets and added $11.1 million this weekend. It had a strong $3.9 million start in Mexico, a decent $1.3 million debut in Spain, and a disappointing $843,000 opening in Germany. With $36.5 million in the bank so far, Jack reaches Russia, Australia, Japan and the U.K. next weekend.
Resident Evil: Retribution opened on Sunday in China and grossed $3.55 million. That brings its total to $183.6 million, which is still far from the last movie's $236.1 million total.
DreamWorks Animation's The Croods—their first movie being released by 20th Century Fox—earned over $6 million from preview shows in Russia, Mexico, and a handful of smaller markets this weekend. Aside from Russia and Mexico, it is also reaching Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K. (along with around 40 other territories) next weekend, and it will surely claim the top spot.
