Friday Report: 'Dumber' Sequel Leads with $14.2 Million
Eager to finally see Harry and Lloyd's new adventure, Dumb and Dumber fans rushed out to theaters on Friday.
The long-awaited sequel, Dumb and Dumber To, easily took first place yesterday, and should wind up with an opening weekend north of $35 million.
Meanwhile, Interstellar topped Big Hero 6 on Friday, though those positions will switch for the full weekend.
Playing at 3,154 locations, Dumb and Dumber To opened to an impressive $14.2 million yesterday. That's the biggest live-action opening day for Jim Carrey since 2003's Bruce Almighty ($20.1 million) and is the best opening day ever for a Farrelly Brothers movie (nearly twice as much as the opening for 2000's Me, Myself and Irene).
This Friday number also compares favorably to Due Date ($12.2 million) and Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa ($12.6 million). The similarity here is that all three titles are road trip comedies that opened in October or November.
If Dumb and Dumber To plays like Bad Grandpa, it will finish the weekend with over $36 million.
Interstellar added $8.3 million yesterday, which was off 51 percent from its first day in nationwide release. The Christopher Nolan sci-fi adventure is now on track to earn over $27 million this weekend.
Disney Animation's Big Hero 6 took third place on Friday with an estimated $8 million. That's off 49 percent from opening day, which is a middle-of-the-road hold for an animated movie (Wreck-It Ralph only dropped 42 percent at the same point in 2012). Big Hero 6 will move up to second place for the weekend with at least $32 million.
Opening at 1,789 theaters, Beyond the Lights bombed with $2.3 million. For the weekend, it's on track to wrap up in the $6-to-$7 million range.
Gone Girl remains in the Top 5 for the seventh weekend in a row. The movie eased 27 percent to $1.35 million, which brings its total to $149.4 million.
Birdman expanded nationwide to 857 locations and earned $690,000 (about even with last Friday). The Fox Searchlight awards hopeful should end up with at least $2 million for the three-day frame.
Playing at 371 locations, Jon Stewart's Rosewater opened to an estimated $422,000 on Friday. That number likely received a boost from Thursday night showings that included a simulcast Q&A between Stewart and fellow Comedy Central personality Stephen Colbert.
Results are not currently available for Saving Christmas, Whiplash and Foxcatcher.
