Around-the-World Roundup: 'Resident Evil' Leads Quiet Pack
In what was easily the slowest weekend at the foreign box office this year, Resident Evil: Afterlife once again emerged victorious, while Eat Pray Love, Despicable Me and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps each expanded in to more major territories and had their best weekends yet.
Resident Evil: Afterlife dipped 36 percent to $15.6 million, holding court for the fourth straight weekend. Its only major opening occurred in Hong Kong, where it registered a solid $848,135. Thus far the fourth installment of the Resident Evil series has rounded up $182.9 million overseas for a worldwide total (domestic plus foreign) of just over $240 million.
Eat Pray Love was up five percent to $13.5 million, thanks to decent openings in Brazil ($2.1 million) and South Korea ($1.2 million). Since it started its run in August, the Julia Roberts globetrotting drama has earned $39.7 million on the international circuit.
Despicable Me nearly doubled its gross from last weekend, climbing 92 percent to $12.45 million. Almost half of this came from a strong $5.55 million debut in Germany. The animated comedy's foreign total now sits at $115.1 million, and it's set to open in France and Spain this weekend.
Wall Street 2 was up 15 percent to $10.7 million from 55 territories. Its hold was due to debuts in France ($2.1 million), Russia ($1 million) and Mexico ($718,632). With $23.1 million in overseas cash, Gordon Gekko and crew next set their sights on the United Kingdom and Spain.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole had its first major outing this weekend, scoring $9.6 million in 24 markets. This included a $3.2 million opening in Russia and a $1.7 million start in Australia. Through its second weekend, the Guardians have earned $11.2 million overseas and are scheduled to fly in to Mexico and Brazil this weekend.
In milestone news, Inception's $8 million weekend take was good enough to push the movie's international total past the $500 million mark. It's the third movie to reach that level this year, following Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3. China also eclipsed the U.K. to become Inception's highest-grossing territory with $54.7 million. The Christopher Nolan mindbender is now set to pass $800 million worldwide sometime next weekend.
