Seven-Day Summary: Crowds Log On to 'Social Network'
While it may not exactly have lived up to the hype, The Social Network easily topped the box office in its first week. Less than $130,000 separated holdovers Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and The Town, while Case 39 and Let Me In failed to scare up much cash. Overall business was off about ten percent from last year, when Zombieland led with $32.8 million.

The Social Network earned $30.6 million at 2,771 locations. This was less than The Town but above Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps among recent adult-oriented movies. It's also easily the best start for an Aaron Sorkin movie, though it lagged behind director David Fincher's Panic Room and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Wall Street 2 moved from third place over the weekend in to second place for the week, down 49 percent to $13.3 million. This brought its 14-day total to just over $39 million, and it's now set to pass predecessor Wall Street's $43.8 million in the next few days (though it still has a long way to go to match Wall Street in attendance).

Legend of the Guardians dipped a light 31 percent to $13.2 million. Thanks to its weak opening last week, though, its total now sits at an underwhelming $32.4 million.

The Town eased 38 percent to $13.1 million. While it finished in fourth place on the week, it held second place Monday through Thursday. Through its third week, Ben Affleck's Boston-set crime drama has earned $67.4 million.

Easy A continued its solid run, falling 36 percent to $8.5 million. This brought the Emma Stone comedy's three-week total to $43.9 million.

Case 39 and Let Me In were major disappointments, finishing in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Case 39 had the slight advantage, earning $6.97 million to Let Me In's $6.7 million.
