Friday Report: 'Mockingjay' Crushes Weak Newcomers on Black Friday
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 ruled the Black Friday box office, while the two newcomers put up disappointing numbers.
The third installment in the Hunger Games franchise added $24.1 million, which is off 56 percent from opening day. That's about on par with Catching Fire's drop at the same point, which is a positive sign for the movie's long-term prospects. To date, Mockingjay has earned $192.7 million, and will pass $200 million on Saturday.
Penguins of Madagascar took in $10.5 million on Friday. In comparison, notorious DreamWorks Animation bomb Rise of the Guardians earned $9.2 million on the same date in 2012. With the Madagascar brand, Penguins really ought to be doing better than this. For the three-day weekend, the movie is on track to earn over $26 million.
Big Hero 6 was strong in third place with $7.74 million. To date, the Disney Animation hit has earned an impressive $156.2 million. Meanwhile, Interstellar added $6.6 million, which brings its total to $137.9 million.
Horrible Bosses 2 wound up in fifth place with an estimated $6.2 million. The movie is on track for $15 million over the three-day weekend, which would put its five-day total below $23 million. In comparison, the first Horrible Bosses opened to $28.3 million over a traditional three-day weekend. This is a very, very poor start.
The Imitation Game opened to an estimated $181,000 from four locations in New York and Los Angeles. That's an excellent per-theater average of $45,250, which means the movie should easily reach the coveted $100,000 average for the three-day weekend. In comparison, The King's Speech averaged $29,763 on its opening day at the same time in 2010.
