Around-the-World Roundup: 'Panda' Topples Mighty 'Pirates'
Helping to soften the impact of a disappointing domestic performance, Kung Fu Panda 2 expanded in to more major markets and took first place at the foreign box office this weekend. Reigning champion Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides eased in to second place, but it already ranks as one of the highest-grossing movies ever overseas. The weekend's domestic winner Super 8 opened to a decent number in a handful of foreign markets.
Kung Fu Panda 2 earned $56.7 million in 45 territories to bring its foreign total to $206.1 million. According to distributor Paramount Pictures International, it opened in first place in all 17 of its new territories. Its top debut came in the United Kingdom, where its $10 million take was solid but a tad behind its predecessor. It outperformed the original Kung Fu Panda in Mexico and Brazil, though, where it launched to $8.3 million and $5.8 million, respectively. It also had a monster $1.3 million start in Peru, which is the second-best opening ever there.
Asian holdover markets continued to put up strong numbers as well. Kung Fu Panda 2 added $9.3 million in China and $5 million in South Korea. China is by-far the movie's highest-grossing market at this point with $71.3 million. The movie is set to expand in to France, Germany, Spain and more next weekend, and still has Australia, Italy and Japan on the horizon.
On Stranger Tides declined 41 percent to an estimated $41.1 million. It held on to first place in Japan for the fourth weekend in a row with $6 million, and its $74.5 million total there is tops among all of its territories. Over the weekend, it passed Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End to become the highest-grossing entry in the series with a huge $678 million. That total was good for sixth place all-time, and it's poised to pass Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Alice in Wonderland by Friday to move up to fourth place. It also now appears to have a great chance of eclipsing The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's $742.1 million total to become the third highest-grossing movie overseas behind James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic (both of which are way out of reach). Add in its soft domestic haul, and On Stranger Tides now ranks 19th on the all-time worldwide chart with $886.8 million.
X-Men: First Class expanded in to a handful of major markets but still dipped 32 percent to $41.2 million. It had its best showing in the U.K., where it added $4 million in its second weekend. Its new territories were largely unimpressive, though. First Class could only muster $2.9 million in Germany, $2.2 million in India, $2.1 million in Japan and $2 million in Italy. It's now made $123.3 million overseas.
While it will likely fall short of its predecessor domestically, The Hangover Part II has already topped it overseas. It added another $39.4 million this weekend to bring its foreign total to $216.4 million. Key holdovers included Germany ($7.9 million), the U.K. ($4.6 million) and Australia ($3.5 million). Including its domestic tally, the comedy sequel has earned $434 million worldwide. With debuts in Spain and Japan to look forward to, it's well on its way to finishing with over $500 million worldwide.
On top of its $35.5 million domestic debut, Super 8 scored $6.7 million from 9 territories. Its only major market was Australia, where it found a solid $2.7 million. It's set to expand in to another 16 territories, including Russia and South Korea, next weekend.
